Medical Social Work Department


The Medical Social Work Department is committed to providing a service which offers the opportunity to identify and deal with all aspects relating to the social, psychological and emotional impact of being admitted to long term care.

This service is also extended to those who avail of: Respite Services, Intermittent Care Service, Convalescent Care or Day Care Centre Services in Leopardstown Park Hospital.


Social Work therapeutic interventions may include:


  • Supportive Intervention
  • Individual Counselling
  • Bereavement counselling
  • Crisis Intervention
  • Care planning
  • Advocacy, empowerment and mediation
  • Networking with statutory and voluntary agencies to keep residents/families/clients /carers informed of their rights, entitlements as well as linking them with appropriate support services and groups
  • Facilitation of family meetings

The Medical Social Work Department runs the Residents’ Advocacy Group to give the residents a voice. This group meets regularly and is very productive.


The social work service is free and confidential and available to all who avail of a service in the Hospital and their families. The Medical Social Work Department works as part of the multidisciplinary team in the Hospital.


How to contact the Department:

Referrals can be made by any member staff, family members or by the resident/clients.

The Medical Social Work Department is located in Glen Units and employs one Senior Social Worker.The department is open Monday to Friday 8am - 4pm.
